REFLECTION: Remember all the Way

A thought from Deuteronomy 8:2…..

    

 “and thou shalt remember all the way…”

                       (Deuteronomy.8:2 KJV).

Long ago when Moses addressed the Israelites, he called upon them to look back and “remember all the way” that they had been. For forty years the people had journeyed through the desert, under his leadership, as they made their way towards their promised land. At times they had been disobedient, obstinate, ungrateful, and full of complaints, yet God had proved faithful throughout their journey. It would be instructive for them to remember their redemption and deliverance from Egypt and the way that had been trekked, with their God, through the wilderness.

 

 

MY WAY – AND HIS

“Remember all the way…”  We need to do the same sort of thing. The Scriptures encourage us to look back and learn from the past. If we are believers we should remember our conversion. It was a precious moment when the Good Shepherd found us, delivered us from our bondage to sin, and brought us into the blessings of His salvation. Since that moment we should remember the way He has led us. There have been dangers, pitfalls, trials, and problems of many kinds, yet the Lord has brought us through. He still leads His people step by step, as He led the Israelites, on their pilgrimage through this world.

 

There is another “way” that must be remembered. It is the way our Lord took as He left the dazzling glories of heaven and came into this world to be the Saviour. Moses said, “Thou shalt remember all the way…”  Should we not remember that entire pathway that led Him from the manger at Bethlehem to the cross of Calvary? Remember His compassion, His love, His patience as He passed through this dark and sinful world. Remember His lonely walk from Gethsemane’s garden to Golgotha’s hill. Remember His burial, His triumphant resurrection, and “all the way” that led Him back to His Father’s throne in heaven when His work on earth was finished.

 

 

WHEN I REMEMBER                                  

When we remember all the way we have taken, we can only marvel at His patience. In spite of all our unfaithfulness we humbly recognize, with Paul, that He has always remained “faithful” (2 Tim.2:13). Looking back we can see that He has never failed us. Our constant Companion has provided for our every need through His unfailing mercies.

 

When we remember all the way He went, we marvel at His grace. That He should come so far and stoop so low is beyond our understanding.

 

“Remember all the way…”  There can only be one response when we consider “all the way” – whether in our lives or in His. Together with those pilgrims of long ago who were “led … forth by the right way”, we should gladly and sincerely “praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” (Ps.107:7-8).
