Should we trust Donald J. Trump?

 

 

 

On the 20th January 2025 the political wind in the United States of America changed direction as Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the country’s 47th President. Democrats lamented with their hopes dashed, while Republicans were jubilant to see the 45th President back in office after a four-year absence.

 

Within a short time Donald Trump was signing one Executive Order after another in rapid succession, undoing many of the decisions made during Joe Biden’s term of office. The world’s most powerful nation now has an authoritative leader whose confidence is second to none. Donald Trump is masterful and eminently suited to face the difficult tasks before him. The introductory remarks of his inaugural address generated loud applause as he declared, “The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. I will, very simply, put America first. Our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free.”

 

He continued, “Today I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense. It’s all about common sense.”

 

While those aspirations resonated with millions of Americans, a few misgivings remain – some of which are rather serious. Is it a good ambition to be striving to create a nation that is proud and making this “a top priority”? Is not pride something detested by God? We must also ask, “Has the golden age of America really begun?” President Trump’s early and enormous support for an IT revolution does not bode well, with the involvement of Larry Ellison, Oracle’s CEO. Neither was Donald Trump’s 3-hour meeting, prior to his inauguration, with Bill Gates a hopeful sign when we consider the agenda of that self-appointed health guru.

 

We must not get carried away. These warning signs should remind us that Donald Trump is not destined to be a kind of “saviour” figure. We need to look elsewhere for guaranteed help. The best advice must be, “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help … “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help” (Ps.146:3,5).
